Where is the Great Ocean Road?

The Great Ocean Road is Australia's Coastal Masterpiece and is located along the stunning south-eastern coast of Victoria, Australia, This iconic, approximately 243-kilometre (151-mile) route, is one of the world's most spectacular coastal drives, renowned for its dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and towering rock formations.

The road officially begins at the surf town of Torquay, famous for its surf culture and the home of Bells Beach. Torquay is located about a 90-minute drive southwest of Melbourne. The route winds westward, finishing at Allansford, near the regional city of Warrnambool.

The most famous section is the Shipwreck Coast (around Port Campbell National Park), home to the legendary Twelve Apostles and other majestic limestone formations like Loch Ard Gorge.

The Great Ocean Road is not merely a path; it is an experience, connecting charming seaside towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, weaving through the lush rainforest of the Great Otway National Park, and finally arriving at the rugged, unforgettable coast.

What's the best thing about the Great Ocean Road?

The Iconic 12 Apostles!

While the Great Ocean Road offers hundreds of kilometres of stunning coastline, charming towns, and rainforest, the single best thing—the unforgettable, jaw-dropping highlight—is witnessing the majestic Twelve Apostles (and the surrounding formations of the Shipwreck Coast).

The Twelve Apostles: These massive limestone stacks, carved by millions of years of wind and violent Southern Ocean waves, rise dramatically out of the sea. Standing on the cliff tops at sunrise or sunset to view these towering columns is a moment of pure, raw natural splendour and an essential Australian bucket-list experience.

The Dramatic Coast: The Apostles are part of the broader Port Campbell National Park, which contains a spectacular collection of other formations, making the entire area the road's most intense visual feast. Don't miss:

Loch Ard Gorge: A beautiful, sheltered cove that tells a dramatic tale of a 19th-century shipwreck.

Gibson Steps: Where you can descend the cliff face to feel the spray of the ocean and stand on the beach beside the enormous stacks.

Ultimately, the best thing about the Great Ocean Road is the way it combines this world-famous natural spectacle with the legacy of its construction—a War Memorial built by returning soldiers—making every kilometre a journey through both natural and human history.

Absolutely. Thousands of reviews support this. The Great Ocean Road is considered one of the world’s greatest scenic ocean drives and your ultimate destination on the tour is the Twelve Apostles – Victoria’s most popular tourist attraction. A private tour lets you share all this, with only the people you choose to accompany you, in style and comfort, led by a friendly, knowledgeable and trustworthy tour guide/driver. You can customise your own itinerary so you see only what you want to see, without sharing the journey with a bunch of strangers. It all makes for a truly unforgettable experience.

With a private tour, you travel in your own small group, with only your friends or family to accompany you. Your vehicle is more like your own private car or VIP vehicle. On a coach tour, you travel with up to 50 or more strangers, in a large, sometimes uncomfortable coach. You may not be able to see out the window properly and at every stop you have to wait for the whole bus to unload and load up again. Large coaches can’t access all stops that smaller mini-buses and VIP vehicles can along the Great Ocean Road. Some people find large coaches make them feel uncomfortable on the windy roads.

Popular sights along the Great Ocean Road include Loch Ard Gorge and the Gibson Steps which are near the Twelve Apostles. Seaside towns of Lorne and Apollo Bay are popular, as is Maits Rest Rainforest Walk and the Memorial Arch and Split Point Lighthouse for photographs. Other stops include lookouts such as Teddys Lookout and Mount Defiance.

Yes with a Melbourne Touring Company Private Tour you can fully customise your itinerary to take in the sights you most want to see and avoid the ones you are not interested in. When planning your tour, please discuss with us your preferences, including starting time and pick up location and we will customise the tour to your exact requirements.

Yes, we can virtually guarantee you will see both koalas and kangaroos on your Melbourne Touring Company Private Tour. We pride ourselves on providing the best wildlife encounters for our guests as we have local knowledge and access to the best locations where these animals are known to congregate.

Summer is definitely the most popular time to visit the Great Ocean Road but it can get quite crowded particularly during peak summer holidays – just before Christmas through to mid-January. We recommend coming in Spring to early Summer – September through to early December – or late Summer to Autumn – late January through to April/May

Absolutely! The children will love the amazing scenery, wildlife encounters and spectacular views along the Great Ocean Road. Our private tour can also take in a visit to the beach and an amazing rainforest walk. Seeing koalas and kangaroos is a special treat for young children.

Yes. Most of the destinations along the Great Ocean Road are within close proximity and only a short walk from the vehicle. The only longer and steeper walk is Maits Rest Rainforest Walk, which can be skipped if needed. We find many older passengers enjoy our Melbourne Touring Company Private Tour as we do everything we can to make the tour as easy, safe and comfortable as possible for our guests.

There is not a great deal of walking involved in a Melbourne Touring Company Great Ocean Road Private Tour. At many stops you will simply have to step out of the vehicle and take a short walk to the lookout or destination. As stated above the only longer walk is the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk which is about 20 minutes and 1.5 km long, but much of it is relatively steep. There is a short walk to the Twelve Apostles but it is not steep

Yes! If you avoid visiting during the peak summer holiday season (mid-December to mid-January) you will avoid the crowds. However if you must arrive during that time, we recommend you taking our ‘reverse’ itinerary which will help avoid the peak crowd crush, especially at the Twelve Apostles.

This depends on what time of year you are visiting. Peak summer can have days reaching over 35° C or more and peak winter can have days as cold as 10° C or less. The winds blowing off the ocean can be strong and chilly on cold days. We recommend loose, comfortable clothing, light in summer, warm in winter. A thick warm (waterproof) jacket is advisable in winter, and a hat and sunscreen in summer.

Well we would say Melbourne Touring Company of course! We do honestly believe that we have the best tour guide/drivers in the business. And they ultimately are what makes the difference. Friendly, knowledgeable, informative, they really know how to look after you. More than just showing you the sights they also tell you wonderful background stories about the history of the area, tales of myths and legend, Indigenous history, and so much more. When combined with our fleet of comfortable and luxury vehicles, we really think we can give you the best private Great Ocean Road tour possible.
